Calculations of dolphins

Berthing and friction piles must be sized for mechanical loads due to ship impact and bollard pull. A dolphin is it composed of multiple sheet pile sections and often complemented by forward and back slats (see cross sections Q2 and Q3 in the left figure).

With the known calculation method, for example, determines the required embedment depth at which the dolphins and piles have the desired component resistance to ship impact.

With the help of numerical simulations, individual issues can be handled such as:

  • Determination of the local stress and strain state for the contact point of a dynamic load (ship impact, bollard pull)
  • Optimization of the cross-sectional dimensions for material savings
  • Determination of the residual life of a scribed dalbens or pile taking into account the progressive corrosion
